Hi Chris

Virtual com ports do have problems connecting to Winlog32 com, the virtual drivers do not always emulate exactly the RS232 com ports.

I am sorry I do not have an answer but perhpas others have encountered this problem and have found a solution?

Have you tried enabling/disabling the DTR and RTS lines?

tried dtr & rts lines on and off in all combinations
will have a look for a better virtual com port driver to see if it will help

My Yaesu FT-990 is calling for comport 12, as the TenTec Omni6+ uses comport 4. I would like to use the two radios for different things. Any help with virtual comports?

Hi

I only have experience with Virtual Com/USB with an Icom radio.

You need special USB cable with interface built in plus a Virtual USB/Com driver - the driver I use was supplied with the cable which I got from the far East
Once I installed the driver my Icom works a treat via USB on Virtual Com 5. Winlog32 only supports up to Com Port 8 but this should be enough.

I have the USB/serial cables. Unfotunately my computer will only access the Yaesu on com 12. Com 8 is taken up by the Omni VI+ which, BTW, is easily controlled by using "IC-703 and CIV 04" in your program.

You could try to change the virtual com port number.

Windows Control Panel

System

Device Manager

PORTS

Right-click your existing port 12 which should be listed and select properties

TAB - Port Settings

Button "ADVANCED"

There should be a list of com ports, some will already be allocated - probably 1-4, but 5, 6 or 7 may still be available, try changing to one that is not allocated.

I've not tried this but I can't think of a reason it would not work - it's unlikely that all com ports up to #12 are already allocated on your system.

Don't forget you need to reasign the Winlog32 RCW to the new port #

As a Post Script:
As an experiment I changed my port from 5 to a unused one as above (Com 8), I got a message about "port may be in use", but I ignored that and all was well once I had closed the RCW and re-opened it, setting the RCW to Port 8.
My Rig is now working fine on virtual com #8.

Rig Control & RS232 - USB converters

I am using USB - serial converters in a SO2R config. This setup works with 3 converters. TRENDnet products works flawless with my contest station setup for the last 6 years. The radios I am using is the Yaesu FT1000MP's with a SO2R controller. Have a look on QRZ.com

I have used these converters with Yaesu FT2000, ICOM 706,703,756 Pro series without any problems. You can even run them on a usb powered 4 port hub.

Here is the cure to your comport problems wrt. comport availability. I normally choose comports 4 & 5 when using USB - serial converters. There is no specific reason for using these 2 comports other than standardizing the contest stations i have to maintain.

If the comport you want to use is not available, then here is what you can do, or at least that is what I always do.

1. Select my computer
2. Select view system information
3. Select hardware
4. Select device manager
5. Select ports (com & LPT)
6. Select prolific USB-Serial Comm Port(COM9) (COM9 is for example)
7. Select port settings
8. Select advanced
9. Change the COM port number to your preference eg. COM4
10. If you are prompted, except the change.
11. Close all the open boxes, and open again till point 6 to double check if the new COM4 port is now active on the USB-Serial converter.

Nothing will happen when forcing comports in this manner because the ports are normally chosen everytime a new device is plugged into a USB port for eg. a memory stick.

Good luck
