Log transfer to Windows 7

Post by GW3XJQ »

Hi, I expect this query has come up before, but I have just registered on this forum and am puzzled?
Simple question please?
I have come back to the hobby after a break and used to log on my old Windows XP machine and now cannot get the old log file (Winpack) to transfer over to the new laptop. Is it possible or do I have to start a new log without all the old QSO's?
Thank you for any tips, I have been trying in vain to get it to transfer and I expect there is a very simple solution?

Hi,

I couldn't find much information on winpack online, but can it export to an ADIF file? Or to a flat text or csv file? If you can get the log into a flat text file there are some utilities around that will convert it to ADIF that you could then import into pretty much any modern logging software...

Many thanks for that very quick reply Chris. No I did a fair amount of searching online also and the Winpack help pages don't seem to open now on Windows7 ?
My old log data is saved on a Windows Notepad and when I run Winpack on my old machine with Windows XP it opens up OK with all the historical QSO's stored in the "notepad".
Not into PC jargon and software here Chris so will need to do some reading on ADIF etc that you refer to. I assume then from what you say, I will need to convert the "Notepad" data to ADIF format? That should hopefully get me up and running again with all my old QSO's.
Thanks again, for getting back so quickly, much appreciated.

Hi Martin

Welcome back to the hobby.

Just clarify about 'Winpack', as I remember this was packet radio software, I did not realise you could log QSO with that program?

If you are talking about Winlog32, then all is clear and perhaps I can help.

Sorry Colin a senior moment, I am afraid they are getting more frequent in my old age!
Yes, of course I meant Winlog, I use Winpack for packet.
I decided to try and "export" my Winlog 32 to a memory stick this afternoon and then transfer it to the new Windows 7 laptop, but still can't get it to work?

Thank you,

Hi Martin

OK, well the correct method is to use the back-up file

On the old computer - back-up your log to the memory stick

(NOT export)

On the new installation of Winlog32....

Menu/File/Maintenance/File maintenance - RESTORE

Select the file on your memory stick

Accept all the prompts

That should do it.

Many thank for that Colin.
I am getting somewhere now, almost there I think.
Successfully, transferred the old log onto new machine but for some reason, the backed up old log onto the memory stick is missing recent entries that I haven't been backing up as I used to use an external disk drive for back up. In the days before USB sticks were available !
At least I am making progress now Colin and much appreciate your help as I am definitely NOT into PC's and jargon, which my little grey cells simply cannot compute !
thank you again 73, Martin, GW3XJQ
