I cannot find information as to the use of the baove field - can someone tell me the intended use of this field ?

Hi Ray
The User field is for anythging you want!
It can be used for specific 'user' interests which would simplify querying the log at a later date.
Options also exist to auto-add Country name, Zones, Distances for VHF QSO's etc.
More advanced use is with the 'Rover' Mode where the current position of the station can be added, calculated upon and later this information can be added to QSL labels etc.
Generally you may want to use it for Contacts Name, QTH etc.
